Undergraduate, 1st Place: Otolaryngologist and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Collaboration in Head and Neck Cancer

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is an aggressive, complex diagnosis that accounts for approximately five percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States (Kawashita et al., 2020;National Cancer Institute, n.d. A). There are various types of HNC and several tumor sites inwhich HNC can potentially occur. Because routine screening for HNC does not exist, it is difficult to diagnose and often found at advanced stages (National Cancer Institute, n.d. A)

Journal ArticleThe relationships among the species of Balsamorhiza and Wyethia (Asteraceae: Heliantheae) were examined using data from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. The ITS sequences were obtained from nine species of Balsamorhiza and 14 species of Wyethia as well as seven outgroup genera

Journal ArticleBalsamorhiza and Wyethia together comprise 24 species native to western North America. All species in the two genera are perennial herbs with large taproots and chromosome base numbers of x = 19. The species of Balsamorhiza have exclusively basal leaves while the species of Wyethia have cauline leaves (in addition to basal leaves in some species)

Responding to Changes in Rated Risk: Incorporating Resilience in Dare County, North Carolina's Coastal Floodplain Management Policy and Planning

Floodplain management is fundamentally linked to floodplain mapping, both of which are necessary components to building resilience to flood risk. How do changes to Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) affect flood risk and resilience, and how do planners and floodplain managers respond to FIRM changes? Using Dare County, North Carolina as a test case, I assess changes proposed in the 2016 preliminary FIRMs, evaluate existing floodplain management policies, and analyze planners' and floodplain managers' strategies and priorities as they plan their transition to the final FIRMs. The goal of this research was to understand the potential for flood risk increases and the extent to which existing floodplain management regulations and strategies are targeted toward building resilience. I found that there is a high level of future flood risk to properties experiencing either no change or decreases in rated risk. Communities currently have minimal resilience built into their floodplain development regulations relative to the higher standards that could be applied. However, planners and floodplain managers are aware of key barriers to resilience and are strategizing ways to increase resilience and planning with future flood risk in mind. Recommendations for improving these strategies follow.Master of City and Regional Plannin

Listening to women\u27s voices : clinicians\u27 perspectives on the benefits of feminist therapy in the treatment of borderline personality disorder

This qualitative, exploratory study examines the perspectives of practicing feminist therapists about the benefits of utilizing feminist therapy for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Twelve licensed clinicians were interviewed about their clinical experiences and perceptions of the benefits of feminist therapy in treating clients diagnosed with BPD. Clinicians discussed the theory and implementation of feminist therapy; how feminist therapists understand BPD in light of current debates on the use of this diagnosis; and the unique benefits feminist therapy may offer in the treatment of BPD. Participants were asked to give their reactions to the BPD diagnosis and the role of trauma in the lives of clients diagnosed with BPD. In particular, clinicians discussed feminist therapy as a framework, lens, and relational method of interacting with clients. Study results were consistent with the hypothesis that the collaborative, relational approach of feminist therapy is of significant benefit to clients who are diagnosed with BPD. An advantage in treatment is this approach is a flexible, integrative practice, able to embrace other modalities and techniques. Finally, the feminist focus on the therapeutic relationship diminishes pathologizing and highlights strengths and capacities, which help to empower clients diagnosed with BPD
